Ethereum Overview
Ethereum Overview
Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform introduced in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and others. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum supports programmable smart contracts, enabling developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) and tokens.
Invention Date: July 30, 2015 (Mainnet launched).
Total Supply: No fixed cap, but Ethereum introduced a burning mechanism (EIP-1559) to regulate supply and reduce inflation.
Purpose: Ethereum initially used Proof of Work (PoW) but transitioned to Proof of Stake (PoS) in September 2022 with "The Merge." This shift aimed to make the network more energy-efficient and scalable.
